New Mexico Stories is grouped into fourteen chapters that discuss the history of New Mexico from the indigenous people who first settled the state to those pioneers and homesteaders who came later. The book discusses the history of the Manzano National Forest and early forest rangers John Johnson who began his Forest Service career in 1914 when rangers camped out in the forest most of the summer and often had to provide their own pack string, Raymond Schmidt another early forest ranger was the first to staff Lookout Mountain Fire Lookout in the Gila National Forest.
In the 1920s trans-continental traffic became popular. Tourist courts and areas for camping were important for travelers, as there were not that many hotels and motels yet. The book goes into detail on some of these early tourist courts and the people who frequented them. The section ends with the history of Truth or Consequences and the changing of the town's name to Hot Springs.
New Mexico has long been a land of mystery and intrigue. From rock art panels left in the desert sun to legends of the La Lorona and other characters terrorizing the state. New Mexico's first UFO sightings occurred in the summer of 1947 and since much publicity has come out of additional stories and legends left behind. The book includes stories of several UFO sightings that are not as well known in the state.
Stories of the Blue Nun are included in the book. She was an extremely dedicated nun who crossed the ocean and ministered to the Native American tribes in the state. She never left Spain, although many of the tribes were able to identify her from a painting the priests had. She was the same woman according to them, but was much younger when she ministered to the tribes.
Many ghost stories make up New Mexico's past. A ghost named Pop Shaffer still resides in the Shaffer Hotel in Mountainair according to those who have visited the site. He is heard walking the halls at night and trying the doors to make sure they are locked.
A ghost lived at the site of Fort Tularosa near the town of Aragon in the southwest corner of the state. When the fort was initially abandoned, travelers would use the old fort for camping and cooking when passing through. Many of these travelers heard a ghost at the site unsaddling his horse and throwing his saddle in the front hall while his spurs jangled as he walked. He would always disappear if anyone came too close.
Brevet Major Carleton and First Lieutenant Sturgis brought one of the first exploratory expeditions to what would become the Salinas Province. They explored the three pueblos at Abo, Quarai and Gran Quivira. Carleton left behind vivid descriptions of the land and people.
The last chapter in the book talks about New Mexico's frontier towns and their contributions to the present-day history of the state. When New Mexico was first settled the three major towns in the state were Lincoln, Las Vegas and Mesilla. Many old west tales have been written about these towns, and Lincoln is the best known for the history of Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County Wars.
The book portrays well known and not so well know facts and historical information about the state and its people.
The book has been updated with eight more chapters discussing legends, fire lookouts, early villages near the Manzanos, Homesteaders in Torrance County, the Black Range and Lily Casey Klasner.
